SIMULATION

The Frasers Hospitality Digital Prototype is a service mapping and simulation exercise with the goal of validating a staffing ratio proposal for Frasers Hospitality’s new Social Living product.

The 3-phase validation methodology consists of a scenario mapping workshop, digital prototype for simulation, and a design report with insights and recommendations.

This project is produced by hyperfield, an experimental aggregation of FARMACY and Vouse that aims to multiply ideas and accelerate transformation of organizations who want to become better versions of themselves.

  1. Scenario Mapping workshop

Mapping out staff roles to be simulated.

Compilation of tasks for actors to complete in the simulation.

A 4-week workshop was conducted with project stakeholders to understand the simulation variables, as well as identify any gaps or data that are required for accurate simulation. The objective is to build a robust digital prototype that simulates the operations of a new social living model.

With the information gathered from the workshop, the number of operational scenarios to simulate was streamlined down to 3 - a worst-case scenario, a typical load scenario, as well as a high frequency scenario.

2. Digital Prototype

User may monitor the simulation in hourly buckets, with an axonometric map to visualize staff movement.

A complex simulation was created with Unreal Engine, to run the tests. The 3 different scenarios were input into the system, in the form of tasks and events to be completed chronologically, accommodating up to 40 different types of tasks. The simulation consists of different types of actors, each with varying decision making trees (to represent different staff roles). As the simulation runs, the user may observe staff movement and task completion via the in-app axonometric map, as well as real-time dashboard.

3. Design Report

Simulation results are extracted from the system and displayed in visual charts.

Recommendations are offered to the client to improve simulation and real results.

The user may tweak the starting conditions and staffing ratios to quickly simulate various manpower structures and workload. Among the infinite number of possible settings, 9 permutations were selected based on the variables and concerns raised, during the scenario mapping workshops. These 9 permutations are then cross-examined to expose challenges and choke points, as well as to identify insights and recommendations to validate the staff ratio for the upcoming Fraser Social Living product.

The application is then able to be used at a later stage, after further finetuning with real data. As well as to build a model towards predicting future choke points and issues.
